“One of the marvelous things about community is that it enables us to welcome and help people in a way we couldn’t as individuals.” – Jean Vanier
Our work is grounded in an approach known as Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD). ABCD is a relationship-driven, strengths-based approach that focuses on identifying and mobilizing often overlooked community assets for sustainable development.
During this year’s Youth Appreciation Day, we experienced firsthand the power of Gifts, Relationships, and Care (GRC), core principles of ABCD. GRC reminds us that everyone holds unique gifts — skills, strengths, and lived experiences. When shared within the framework of relationships, these gifts become acts of care.
This was especially clear during the gathering of youth from four communities—Lengkok Bahru, Bukit Ho Swee, Lavender, and Henderson. Reflecting on the day, one truth stood out: the strength of a community is measured by the connections we dare to make, even when they reveal our deepest truths.
One activity invited participants to identify their own gifts and those of their peers, sparking an atmosphere of empathy and genuine connection. As they highlighted each other’s strengths, a beautiful tapestry of understanding and care began to weave itself among the group.
The event revealed the courage required to be vulnerable and the strength found in community. Each youth introduced themselves and shared something they appreciated about their neighborhood — whether it was a unique quality, a kind gesture, or a moment of connection.
This day was made possible through the generosity of Youth Corps Singapore, who provided the space, and the culinary talents of one of the community mothers, who prepared the food.
We played games, laughed, and closed the evening with a screening of Wonderland at The Projector. We encouraged the youths to spot GRC in the film—the subtle ways the characters cared for one another through their gifts, both tangible and intangible.
More than just a day of fun, this event carried a deeper message: when we gather as a community, we do so not only to enjoy good times. It’s also about being there for each other as we go through life, each shouldering the weight of our own burdens. Our strength comes from our willingness to connect, share our gifts, and face our truths together.
As we move forward in our work, let us remember that these connections form the foundation of a healthy, thriving community—one built on empathy, mutual support, and shared journeys.
