Growing up, I always admired my mom’s relentless work ethic and her ability to adapt to whatever life threw at her. Despite language barriers, she always found ways to connect with others, contributing to our community through cookouts, decorations, and more. She gave her all, no matter the task.
What struck me most was her unwavering determination to learn, grow, and give back. Her perseverance wasn’t just for herself but our family’s future.
When the pandemic hit, everything changed. Like so many others, we were thrust into uncertainty, yet, in that moment, my mom’s skills, which she had nurtured over time, became our lifeline. She had been part of programs like Bakers Beyond and Sew Can We, where she honed her abilities in baking and sewing. I remember watching her practice late into the night, learning new recipes, and perfecting her sewing techniques. And when the world slowed down, it was those skills that became the foundation of our home-based business – Intan Bakery.
Starting Intan Bakery wasn’t easy but my mom’s unwavering commitment inspired me to step up in ways I hadn’t before. The responsibility of running a business alongside school and family matters has been overwhelming at times, but it’s also taught me resilience, time management, and the importance of perseverance. What has been most meaningful, though, is watching my mom evolve. She’s gone from a determined learner to a confident business owner, and has given me a deeper respect for her and for the sacrifices she’s made for all of us these past years.
One of the things I’m most grateful for is the community my mom found through Sew Can We. Together, they’ve built a support system where they can share ideas, offer encouragement, and lift each other up. For my mom, this group has become more than just a place to learn new skills. It’s become a second family; a community of like-minded women who understand the challenges they face and the strength it takes to overcome them.
At the upcoming Boutique Fairs, my mom and other seamstresses will sell their creations. All proceeds will go back to the mothers. This event, made possible through Beyond, reminds us of the power of community and shared purpose.
Beyond has played an important role in supporting our growth, and connecting us to resources that have made our journey smoother. They helped us get on e-commerce platforms, provided workshops and opened doors to opportunities we never thought possible.
Looking back, it’s not just the business that we’ve built that I’m proud of. It’s the journey we’ve taken together as a family, and the growth I’ve seen in my mom, that fills me with a sense of pride and gratitude. Through her, I’ve learned that no matter the odds, with perseverance and the will to learn, you can always find a way forward. And for me, that’s the greatest lesson of all.
