Story Contributed by David, Community Worker
I first met her through Community Asset Mapping – part of our regular door-knocking process to connect with new families or reconnect with those we haven’t seen in a while. It’s not just about finding out who needs support. It’s about discovering the strengths that already exist in the neighbourhood, and inviting residents to be part of our programmes or community events – whether through volunteering or simply showing up to participate and connect.
When she opened the door, she recognised Beyond right away.
“I’ve known Beyond for more than 20 years now,” she said. “But I’ve been busy juggling 16-hour shifts that I haven’t been involved with Beyond’s programmes for a while.”
She didn’t say much more. But there was warmth in her voice. The kind that tells you the connection meant something, even if life took her elsewhere for a while.
The fact that she remembered us, and welcomed us back into her life, said enough.
And then there was another mother we met during the same process. Three young children, one with special needs. She doesn’t have a job right now, not because she isn’t willing, but because caregiving takes everything she has. The family lives on supplementary aid, but when food rations are distributed in the block, she passes on what extra she has to her elderly neighbours.
“They’re always looking out for us,” she said. “It’s only right to share.”
Her nine-year-old son gave me a homemade sticker. A small gesture, but offered with such pride that I found myself holding it like it was something precious.
These were just two doors out of many. But behind both was a kind of strength that doesn’t announce itself. It’s steady. It’s generous. It shows up in the way people remember those who once stood by them, and in the way they now choose to stand by others.
That’s what Community Asset Mapping reveals. Not just what’s missing, but what’s already here – neighbours who care, families who give, and a community that keeps finding ways to hold each other up.
If you’ve ever wondered what it means to build a strong community – it starts with simple acts. A conversation at the doorstep. A neighbour looking out for another. A sticker handed to a stranger. It starts with people like you.
If you’d like to get involved, we’d love to have you with us. There’s always room at the table:
