2536 – The In-Between Moments

Comms Team Another Week Beyond

Story contributed by Pei Ling, Corporate Relations

“Shift this one here. No, turn it first. You want the corners to lock in.”

It’s not the kind of instruction you expect when unloading groceries. But stacking over 400 cartons into a temporary storeroom isn’t just about strength – it takes foresight, strategy, and a bit of street smarts too.

Afiq* and Darren*, both seventeen, are used to the rhythm by now. Every few months, when donations from FairPrice Group’s A Full Plate campaign arrive, they’re among the first to help unload and sort the cartons at our Whampoa space. It’s the first step in a larger process where the packs will later be distributed to households across different neighbourhoods.

Most people might think all you need is muscle. But there’s a method to it – knowing how weight should be distributed, how tall you can stack, how to make the most of limited space. It helps the next team – the movers, the volunteers, the ones bringing these packs to void decks – do their task better too.

Uncle, one of our long-time staff members, has done this more times than he can count. He moves slower now, but his eyes scan fast. He knows when a stack is off-balance before it leans. He knows which row to fill first so nothing topples later.

What he brings is experience. What the boys bring is energy. Together, they find a flow.

That’s something we see often in our work – when different strengths come together, something clicks. It’s not about hierarchy or who knows more. It’s about noticing what each person brings, and making space for it. Across generations, there’s always something to pass on, and something worth picking up.

The boys have also been part of our weekly soccer programme for a while. But recently, they haven’t been showing up as often. When their community worker checked in, they explained why: they’re preparing for their N Levels.

For Afiq, this is his second try. But both he and Darren say they’re feeling more prepared and more hopeful. They know where to go if they need help. They’ve heard that reminder enough to know it wasn’t just said in passing.

That confidence and belief doesn’t come from a single programme or one person. It comes from being part of something, whether on the pitch or in the storeroom, where their presence matters and their effort counts.

And maybe that’s the real value of moments like these. Not just in what gets delivered, but in what gets built – relationships, responsibility, the feeling of being part of something that works because people show up for one another.

Because that’s the thing about food distributions. On the surface, they may look like logistics. But look closer, and they become something more – an opportunity for connection.

Food may fill the shelves.

But it’s these shared, everyday moments, the ones in between, that quietly shape the kind of community we all want to live in.

Help us make room for more of them.

Moments where someone feels seen.

Where someone shows up.

Where someone starts to believe they belong.

Your support helps us walk with families, not ahead of them, and to build the kind of spaces where people can show up for one another.

Join us in making room to belong.
