For years, the residents of a public rental block in Yishun struggled with unsanitary rubbish disposal, bird-feeding, and littering from open windows. As tensions mounted, frustration could have easily divided the community. But instead, a group of proactive volunteers decided to address the issue themselves, determined to improve their living environment—not just for themselves, but for everyone in the neighbourhood.
These volunteers initiated a series of conversations with their neighbours where residents openly expressed their frustrations and shared personal stories. “It doesn’t feel good to come home from work after a long day to a living environment that is unhygienic,” one resident explained. Others shared their embarrassment when hosting visitors, feeling the state of their surroundings reflected poorly on their rental community.
Yet, despite the clear frustrations, empathy became the cornerstone of these conversations. The volunteers and residents didn’t just vent their anger—they tried to understand the reasons behind the behaviours causing the problem. Some neighbours might have mobility challenges, making it hard for them to dispose of bulky items. Others, like children, might simply not know better. This shift in mindset was a turning point—not in solving the issue overnight, but in laying the foundation for a stronger community that looks out for one another.
Many had already taken action, speaking directly to their neighbours about the littering and improper disposal of rubbish. While some efforts were successful, others faced resistance. One well-meaning resident, for example, was met with a sharp “mind your own business!” Yet even these setbacks only strengthened the resolve of the group. Their perseverance and commitment to engaging with their neighbours, instead of retreating in frustration, became a driving force in their efforts.
Although these conversations are still ongoing, the journey itself has already produced meaningful change. What started as an effort to address unsanitary conditions has blossomed into a collective movement built on shared values: empathy, cooperation, and responsibility. The success isn’t just in fixing a problem; it’s in the growing pride residents are taking in their community.
This is not a story about failure or the persistence of anti-social behaviour. It’s a story about the power of ownership, where the effort to create a welcoming, hygienic, and safe environment is a success in its own right. These residents aren’t waiting for someone else to solve their problems—they are working together, proving that pride in your home and surroundings isn’t reserved for those who live in mansions. It belongs to everyone, regardless of whether you live in a rental community or elsewhere.
By focusing on their strengths these residents are not just solving a problem, they are building a community they can all be proud of.
